CESA has been in existence for over 65 years and has a diverse member base across a broad spectrum of company sizes and ownership profiles, from both a race and gender perspective. The CESA membership base is made up of companies that are wholly locally owned and operated as well as some that are locally operated but owned by multi-national groups. Member companies offer consulting engineering services that include a comprehensive range of planning, design and project delivery services across all engineering disciplines including Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial and Mining etc.

Mission Statement

CESA is committed to the promotion of excellence in the consulting engineering industry on behalf of its members and stakeholders. Through its members, CESA seeks to continuously improve the quality of life of people by interpreting the environment and pioneering change in partnering with all key stakeholders. In so doing, CESA strives to enhance the industry and provide a credible impact on all South Africans.

  • Provide Business Support to Members and Clients with emphasis on Procurement

  • Create an awareness among consulting engineers of issues affecting the industry

CESA Member Firms:

  • Adhere to Quality Management Systems, a Sustainability Reporting Framework, a Business Integrity Management System (BIMS) and the CESA Code of Conduct
  • Offer a commitment to continuous education and to the upliftment of their staff and the communities they serve. Many firms have empowerment programmes, contribute to bursary schemes and provide Enterprise Development Initiatives within the industry. They assist professionals and construction companies to grow
  • Adhere to the Construction Industry Sector Charter as gazetted in terms of Section 9 of Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), which supports transformation and is the basis on which public sector procurement takes place
  • Carry a required level of Professional Indemnity Insurance, which provides clients with financial recourse in the event of non-performance, insufficient design, failure or neglect caused by the member firm

CESA Structure:

  • A well-structured organisation manages the activities of CESA. A President and Council are elected every 2 years
  • A Council and Board of Directors meet regularly to organise and oversee activities
  • Administration is performed by a full-time Directorate based in Johannesburg comprising 17 full time staff members
  • 12 Branches are active in nine provinces throughout South Africa
  • CESA has established a Young Professionals Forum to nurture younger professionals and to promote the engineering profession among the youth 
  • CESA is the 6th largest member of FIDIC (International Federation of Consulting Engineers) which comprises 90 Member Associations
  • CESA is involved beyond the borders of South Africa through the Group of Africa Member Associations (GAMA), the FIDIC regional group.
  • Together with other Built Environment Professional Organisations created a Built Environment Professions Export Council (BEPEC)
