Consulting Engineers South Africa’s (CESA) newly appointed President, Abe Thela, recently presented his presidential message and theme for the year at a function held in Johannesburg.   With the theme of ‘Sustaining Consulting Engineering is Key to Growing the Economy’ Thela stated that the National Development Plan (NDP) was created in order to develop the South Africa’s economy. Government through the NDP has identified infrastructure development as key to the socio economic development of the country.  Thela believes that the NDP and its objectives will never come to fruition unless there is involvement of consulting engineers at the forefront of this development.

Consulting Engineering, although a relatively small sector, has a large multiplier effect on the development of infrastructure as consulting engineers are the designers that create the large scale infrastructure projects that employ large numbers of people during the construction, operation and maintenance phases of infrastructure.

CESA calls for investigation of the abuse of Section 32

Following complaints from its member firms, Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) has noted with concern the blatant abuse of Section 32 of the Municipal Finance Management Act and therefore calls on the Auditor General, National Treasury and the Public Protector to investigate the deviations.

LEADERSHIP - THE KEY TO SUSTAINABILITY: CESA 2013 Conference and Exhibition – Westin Cape Town

Consulting Engineers South Africa recently hosted a very successful conference at the Westin in Cape Town attended by over 200 delegates featuring 20 industry speakers. Lefadi Makibinyane, CESA CEO opened the conference by welcoming delegates and special guests that included keynote speaker, sustainability expert and author, Jason Drew and the Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Ian NeilsonMakibinyane stated in his welcoming remarks that there were many challenges to Sustainability and that the National Development Plan was key to addressing these challenges that included the alleviation of poverty and inequality. He maintains that although the Public Infrastructure Coordinating Committee (PICC) is to be applauded much work still needs to be done to resolve the lack of capacity in the public sector.  Procurement is another burning industry issue and he contends that quality should be the basis underpinning sustainable development. He believes that what is called for is visionary selfless leadership and hence the theme of the conference – ‘Leadership the Key to Sustainability’.


Abe Thela, the newly elected President of CESA launched the CESA Sustainability Framework that has been adopted as compulsory for membership of CESA, at the CESA AGM held at their annual conference in November at the Westin in Cape Town.  All member firms are now required to prepare a sustainability report as part of their annual declarations to CESAThela quoted Lee Scott, Wal-Mart CEO in his presentation, “Sustainability is the single biggest business opportunity of the 21st century….It will be the next source of competitive advantage.”


At the Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) AGM held at the CESA Conference in Cape Town on Monday 11th November, Abe Thela from Nyeleti Consulting was appointed as President of the organisation for the next two years.

CESA Supports Medium Term Budget focus on NDP

Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) is encouraged that the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement demonstrates government’s resolve to implement the National Development Plan (NDP).

“We have been vocal about our support for the NDP as a roadmap and urged the government to provide the much required political leadership in ensuring the plan is implemented for the benefit of society and growth of our economy. We are pleased that the plan is taking its rightful centre stage and Government is assured of our backing in ensuring that the ideals and fundamentals of the plan are realised,” avers CESA CEO Lefadi Makibinyane.
