People Management Skills

Most engineers (or even supervisors and managers!) have received little training for dealing with people and often find themselves having to constantly interact, communicate, motivate and even discipline others. No amount of technical expertise will help you deal with people, but this hands-on 1 day training course will give you valuable insights, tools and techniques for building rapport, resolving conflicts, improving communication, facilitating problem-solving, and confronting problem behaviour effectively and appropriately.

“In today’s increasingly complex and global business environment, what do technical organisations need most?Companies need engineers and managers who are more than technical… who can communicate and lead in ways that accelerate and integrate innovation and ideas.” Steven Cerri.

Most supervisors and managers will tell you that the most challenging part of their jobs is the people component! This is hardly surprising when you consider that managing people properly is an on-going development process. Skills such as communication, managing relationships, preventing or resolving conflicts, getting commitments from others, or dealing with problem behaviour need to be constantly assessed and refined.

This 1 day training course will provide you with proven, practical tools and guidelines on how you can actively improve your ability to manage and gain results through others. Discover how to:

·         Build rapport with staff, colleagues and clients to ensure you are all committed to the same goals and work seamlessly together to achieve these goals

·         Limit project delays and budget overruns by reducing sick leave, absenteeism and demotivation by identifying the best possible way to motivate your staff

·         Encourage the kind of employee behaviour you want by discovering the best way to communicate with each member of your team

·         Understand why people react the way they do to different situations, and limit any potentially negative repercussions by fine-tuning your responses to these reactions

·         Use your understanding of how and why conflicts arise to understand the best possible approach to resolving conflict within your team quickly and successfully

·         Confront poor performance, problem behaviour or ill-discipline immediately and effectively to ensure your project deadlines and quality delivery are not compromised

·         Predict future problems and hear what your staff are really telling you by learning to use active listening techniques: what does tone, body language, facial expression and word choice really tell you?

·         Use Emotional Intelligence to understand how your colleagues and staff prefer to be dealt with – and use these techniques to boost their performance
